INTRODUCTION

Marius Lucien Coetzee was born in South Africa on 30 May 1969. He matriculated in 1988 from the Pretoria High School for Art, Ballet, Music and Drama (now known as Pro Arte). He continued his studies at the University of Pretoria in Political Sciences and Music specialising in Art Singing Performance.


In 1993 he was the recipient of a SAMRO ( the Southern African Music Rights Organisation grant for studies in the field of Arts Management. He spent this period in Helsinki, Finland. During the course of this year he became very interested in Finnish arts/culture policy and the dynamics of contemporary Finnish aesthetics. Shortly after his return to South Africa (October 1994), he was appointed as the Marketing Manager of the State Theatre Dance Company. In December 1994 the State Theatre Dance Company sent him on an extensive study visit to Belgium and the Netherlands to observe the management & marketing sections of acclaimed dance troupes in Brussels (Rosas, Ultima Vez) and Amsterdam (National Ballet), as well as the Netherlands Dance Theatre in the Hague.


In 1997 he received a grant for an extensive internship in Israel where he visited the marketing sections of the acclaimed Bat Sheva Dance Company, New Israeli Opera, the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra as well as other prominent Israeli ensembles.
